Shortly Announces Debut Album ‘Dancer,’ Shares Single “Science”

Detroit’s Shortly, whose government name is Alexandria Maniak, has been steadily releasing music for quite a few years. Now fans can look forward to her debut full-length studio album, Dancer, dropping September 24 via Triple Crown Records. Listen to Shortly’s new single “Science” below.

As Brooklyn Vegan reports, Dancer is produced by Maniak, bandmates Austin Stawowczyk and Kris Herrmann, and Hop Along’s Joe Reinhart. Most of the production took place in Philadelphia. Shortly tells Brooklyn Vegan they were hesitant to include “Science” on the new record.

“It was originally a piece I wrote to vent about some of the harder and honestly kind of morbid feelings I felt about my childhood,” Maniak says. “It took a sec for the song to sit comfortably with me, originally, I didn’t even want it on the album and recording it was really hard, but I felt like it needed to be recorded. After sitting with it for this long I can see where those feelings came from and I’ve coped with them, now I see what it is for real!

The song is about growing up and experiencing everything for the first time. The recurring epiphany that you are alive.”

Shortly will be stopping by the El Club in Southwest Detroit on November 27 opening for Chloe Moriondo. Maniak is pulling double duty on this tour as she also plays in Moriondo’s band.
