Record Store Day 2025: What you need to know

Christmas Day for vinyl record lovers is upon us. The 18th year of Record Store Day takes place on Saturday, April 12 at independent record stores across the world.

As with previous editions of the retail holiday, RSD 2025 features a myriad of titles available exclusively or as timed exclusives on Saturday. From alternative godfathers The Cure and “Brat summer” ringleader Charli XCX to legendary poet Gil Scott-Heron and iconic film composer John Williams, there is something for anyone who enjoys music.

See some of the noteworthy releases below. This is definitely not a compilation of everything coming out Saturday. You can see the full list of this year’s RSD offerings at recordstoreday.com.

Record Store Day 2025 highlights

The Cure – The Head on the Door (Picture Disc)

Rhino

The Cure will reissue their sixth studio album The Head on the Door as an RSD exclusive picture disc. Originally released in 1985, The Head on the Door saw Robert Smith take The Cure in a more pop direction with hits like “In Between Days” and “Close to Me.” This album also features one of my favorite Cure songs of all time, “A Night Like This.”

A Day to Remember – Attack of the Killer B-Sides

Craft Recordings

Florida metalcore pop-punkers A Day to Remember are celebrating the 15th anniversary of their third EP Attack of the Killer B-Sides. The four-track record will be printed on neon orange vinyl, featuring an acoustic version of the Homesick cut “Another Song About the Weekend,” as well as ADTR’s cover of The Fray’s hit “Over My Head (Cable Car)” originally found on the compilation album Punk Goes Pop 2.

Chvrches – Every Open Eye

Glassnote

Scottish synth-pop trio Chvrches will mark the 10th anniversary of their second studio album Every Open Eye with an RSD-first re-release. The two-disc set features the original album on one and eleven songs on the second, including previously unreleased track “Up in Arms.” And with an album that features the single “Clearest Blue,” it only makes sense that this version of Every Open Eye comes on blue vinyl.

Shudder to Think – Pony Express Record

Legacy Recordings

While Shudder to Think was the second defector from the legendary Dischord label to a major, don’t get it twisted; this is anything but a sell-out record. Hit Liquor and X-French Tee Shirt hit just as hard today as they did nearly 30 years ago, and the influence of this record is everywhere in any angular, dissonant post-punk and hardcore released today.

Morphine – Bootleg Detroit LP

Rhino

Recorded live at St. Andrews Hall in 1994 on the band’s “Cure for Pain” tour and released to vinyl for the very first time, this is not only a local gem but a document of a band that meshed jazz and blues into their rock and was best heard live on stage.

Gorillaz – Demon Days Live at the Apollo Theater

Parlaphone

I had this on DVD and wore it out nearly two decades ago, back when a Gorillaz tour rarely happened in the U.S. and it felt like an event. The main players and guests from Demon Days, including but not limited to Shaun Ryder, Ike Turner, MF Doom, Dennis Hopper and Nenah Cherry drop in to give more than a performance, but a celebration.

Metro Detroit record stores participating in Record Store Day 2025

There are plenty of independent record shops in Southeast Michigan participating in Record Store Day. Below is a partial list of stores but be aware that product is extremely limited — especially with RSD exclusives. You can search for locations near you at recordstoreday.com. I suggest you call ahead to your preferred record stores to confirm that they’ll carry the RSD releases you’re looking for.

Ferndale Radio favorite Found Sound in downtown Ferndale will celebrate Record Store Day with a live performance and signing from Detroit jazz great Wendell Harrison at 6 p.m. The store will also host giveaways including concert tickets, Found Sound merchandise and more throughout the day.
