Main Art Theater in Royal Oak Forced to Close Permanently

Main Art Theater Royal Oak

It seems independent film focused venue Main Art Theater in Royal Oak won’t be returning. The marquee on the decades old movie theater states that their landlord kicked them out of the building.

The Detroit News film critic Adam Graham summed up perfectly how a lot of us feel learning the news:

“Landlord kicked us out,” the message reads. “It’s been a fun ride. … RIP 1941-2021.”

Main Art Theater has been a staple in Metro Detroit for fans of indie films and fun midnight screenings of cult favorites. Located just north of downtown Royal Oak at Main Street and 11 Mile Road, the Landmark Theaters-owned property was forced to shut down like the rest of the cinema industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. The venue reopened on Christmas Day last year but shut its doors again this past April due to financial struggles. At the time the theater owners said it was a temporary closure.

Here’s Ferndale Radio’s own Dave Phillips with “The Room” star Tommy Wiseau during a midnight screening at Main Art Theater.

Barring any reversal, the final two showings at Main Art Theater were the Michelle Pfeiffer comedy “French Exit,” and the Oscar-winning “Minari” that stars Michigan native Steven Yeun.
