Sometimes when an artist releases what they call a concept album, it doesn’t actually live up to that, well, concept.
That definitely isn’t the case with the latest album from multi-instrumentalist Elise Trouw.
The California native has been enthralling audiences with her music and visual art for nearly a decade. Trouw’s live looping skills have garnered her millions of views on YouTube and a spot on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform her mashup of Foo Fighters and Bobby Caldwell.
Most recently, she dropped The Diary of Elon Lust last February — creating an alter ego that represents the worst dude you’ve ever met. The actual music, however, shows just how much Trouw has sonically matured.
“A lot of it is based on casual, day-to-day misogyny.” – Elise Trouw on ‘Elon Lust’
Songs like the single “The Perfect Girl” delivers glossy pop that will stick with you long after the tune has ended. Then you have tracks like “(I Like My Women) Shaved,” “A Little Blood” and “Gentleman,” and you start to realize the absolute disgusting things men have said to Trouw — whether in person or through DMs.
“I probably wrote the first song for it [The Diary of Elon Lust] seven years ago, and it was kind of just like a joke thing where a guy said something kind of rude, but also kind of funny to me,” Trouw explained to me before her headlining show at the Lager House in Corktown Detroit. “And I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m going to make a joke song out of this just for fun.’ A lot of the titles of the songs are…direct quotes, and then of course, the rest of the lyrics are kind of just expanding on those ideas. A lot of it is based on casual, day-to-day misogyny…and just those experiences and trying to turn them into something fun, but also to express kind of what that feels like to experience.”
