Amyl and the Sniffers blast off in Hamtramck

When Amyl & the Sniffers took the stage July 23 at the Outer Limits Lounge, they blasted a sold-out room into motion.

A fitting place for this evening, this is a warm old-school venue with great sound and line of vision from all points. The entire room could see and hear what was coming directly at us: VOLUME and hard-edge PUNK-tinged rock. This band DELIVERS.

A powerful front-woman, Amy Taylor headbangs and fist pumps her way through the songs, as the crowd shouts along. She is sweet, has a great sense a humor, but is also “donʼt-fuck-with-me” TOUGH. A natural.

The band cranks out “Starfire 500,” killinʼ it with the amazing jam that is the first half of the song. The band is consistently TIGHT and the combination of Declan Martens on lead guitar, Gus Romer on bass and Bryce Wilson on drums is something to experience. Their musicianship takes the punk tinge to a whole new level.

Live, the songs come to life with EXTREMELY HARD-DRIVING FORCE. as in the rapid-fire “Monsoon Rock.” The band RIPS thru every song getting more crowd-surfing slam-dancing mosh-pitting reaction

.

Amy is just as physical onstage, HIGH VOLTAGE, and the crowd LOVES her. Punk will always have a special place in my heart, and this band will as well. Sheer BRILLIANCE is what can you expect from a band who put scrubbing hairy armpits in their video “I Got You”, but also took it above and beyond by adding a toenail clipping scene. Through “Cup of Destiny,” Gacked On Anger,” and “Control,” the entire performance provided an enjoyable example of that sensibility. No frills, from-the-gut, HEAT, SWEAT, SPIT and RAW, but with the added pleasure of a hard-hitting band of extremely talented musicians, who came together as friends, and just let things happen organically, as some of the best things in life do.

“Some Mutts” ended the set with the same ENERGY they started the night with. The music came to a halt leaving us and our ears reverberating from a job well-done.

It is a privilege seeing bands of this stature at this stage in their careers in smaller rooms. I had to purchase the AWESOME vinyl package of their self-titled first Album, the No. 1 selling vinyl in Australia, “Amyl & the Sniffers.” It was great meeting Declan and Amy afterward- they LOVED Outer Limits Lounge and Detroit, and they promised theyʼd be back.

Amyl & the Sniffers are on their way at a high speed, and thatʼs exactly how they play. If you missed them, don’t make the same mistake next time! Simply put, Amyl & the Sniffers FUCKING ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!
