Alt Chart Toppers lovelytheband on ‘Broken’ Success, New Album and Dogs

Chances are you’ve heard the infectious hook of “Broken,” the breakout hit for Los Angeles-based lovelytheband. The trio sat down with us after their Mo Pop Festival set last Sunday and ahead of the release of their full-length debut, Finding It Hard to Smile, this Friday (August 3).

The last time lovelytheband were in town, they played at Ferndale’s The Loving Touch back in December. Frontman Mitch Collins, who happened to be born in Kalamazoo, mentioned that fact while on the Mo Pop stage. He was clearly appreciative of the uptick in audience size over the last eight months.

“It’s like a superstitious thing at this point,” Collins says. “We always show up to somewhere knew and we’re like, ‘Ah, I wonder how many people are going to be there. There’s gonna be like 20 people there, probably.’ A lot of these festivals we play early. We opened the main stage today and we didn’t know what to expect. We opened Hangout [Festival} and we didn’t know what to expect. But every time there are more and more people and it’s just been more and more exciting.”

Listen to the rest of the interview below, where we all share our love of dogs, Tito’s and Sprite, Mitch’s goal to have a seconds-long cameo in a police procedural and more.
