Ty Segall and Tim Presley: Noise rock heaven

Ty Segall and Tim Presley are a match made in noise rock heaven. The two artists certainly share many of the same characteristics, but each have honed their own individual sound that is uniquely singular. That is exactly what makes this pairing so compelling on the new Ty Segall & White Fence release, entitled “Joy”.

There are moments where each songwriter is holding the reigns, but it is a constant ebb and flow. When it is at its most interesting is when the two artists mesh together to make an indiscernible amalgamation of noise pop. Both artists share an affinity for off-kilter pop songs — Ty with his fuzzed out melodies and Tim with his noise rock guitar experimentation.

Together, they’ve created an infectious formula for warped pop music. Each song bobs and weaves throughout the blistering 14 tracks, and the most exciting part is the anticipation of finding out exactly when and how each song will fall off the rails.

After uniquely warping 13 songs in a row, Ty and Tim finish the album, almost mockingly, with the alt-country Americana influenced ballad “My Friend.” The anticipation for the seemingly inevitable train wreck builds and when the tension is at an all-time high, the song ends. This song might be one of the prettiest songs either artist has ever made. Tucked away at the end of a pop record; the first pop song.
